Cloud Accounting Software
The days of sending a shoebox of receipts to your accountant in January are long gone. Good cloud accounting software means your records are live, your bank feed reconciles automatically, your VAT return is ready when the quarter ends, and your accountant can see the same picture you can at any point in the year.
We work across a range of cloud accounting platforms. The three we use most often, and where our team has the deepest knowledge, are Xero, FreeAgent, and Dext. For most clients, one or a combination of these handles everything they need. We also work with a range of other specialist tools for clients who already use them.
In a nutshell: we set up, configure, and manage your cloud accounting software so it does the work it's supposed to do: clean records, accurate VAT, and a clear financial picture any time you need one.
The three platforms we work with most
We’re a FreeAgent Partner
FreeAgent is designed for smaller businesses, sole traders, and freelancers who want everything in one place without the complexity of a full accounting suite. It handles invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, VAT, and Self Assessment from a single, clean dashboard.
Key strengths: intuitive for non-accountants, built-in MTD for VAT and MTD for ITSA compliance, tax estimate visible at all times, and free for NatWest, RBS, and Mettle business banking customers.
We’re FreeAgent-certified, and it’s our first recommendation for sole traders, freelancers, and small limited companies that don’t need the broader Xero ecosystem.
We’re a Xero Certified Advisor
Xero is our primary recommendation for limited companies and growing businesses that want a full accounting platform. It has strong bank feed connectivity, excellent reporting, good payroll and VAT integrations, and a large ecosystem of add-ons for businesses with specific needs.
Key strengths: real-time bank reconciliation, multi-currency, MTD for VAT built in, management reporting, and easy access for your accountant alongside you.
We’re Xero-certified, and we set it up, configure it, and maintain it for clients across a range of sectors.
We use Dext - Essential for bookkeeping
Dext isn’t an accounting platform — it’s the tool that removes the manual data entry problem. Point your phone at a receipt, forward a supplier invoice to your Dext inbox, or connect a supplier portal directly, and Dext reads the document, extracts the key data, and pushes it through to Xero or FreeAgent automatically.
Key strengths: eliminates the pile-of-receipts problem, improves data accuracy, speeds up reconciliation, and keeps bookkeeping current rather than becoming a quarterly catch-up exercise.
Dext works alongside Xero or FreeAgent, not instead of them. For clients with significant volume of supplier invoices or expenses, it’s the tool that makes bookkeeping genuinely low-effort.
Other tools we work with
Many clients come to us already using a platform or add-on we haven’t configured ourselves. In most cases, we can work with what’s already in place or advise on whether a switch makes sense. Here’s a brief guide to the other tools we encounter regularly:
Sage - one of the longest-standing accounting platforms in the UK. Sage 50 is widely used by more established businesses; Sage Business Cloud is the cloud-based version. We can work with Sage where it’s already in place, though for new clients we typically recommend Xero or FreeAgent.
QuickBooks - a well-known alternative to Xero, popular with US-headquartered businesses and their UK subsidiaries. Solid platform; we can work with it alongside existing setups.
Fathom - a reporting and analysis tool that sits on top of Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent. Produces polished management reports and dashboards. Useful for clients who want more from their management accounts than the base platform provides.
Approvalmax -an accounts payable approval workflow tool that connects to Xero or QuickBooks. Useful for businesses that need purchase order controls or multi-level approval before invoices are paid.
Hubdoc - a document collection and data extraction tool, broadly similar to Dext. Fetches statements automatically from banks and suppliers and pushes the data to Xero or QuickBooks. Now owned by Xero.
Autoentry - another document capture tool for extracting data from supplier invoices and receipts. Used by some existing clients; functionality is broadly similar to Dext.
WorkflowMax - project management and job costing tool integrated with Xero. Particularly useful for project-based businesses (architects, agencies, consultancies) that want to track time, cost, and profitability per job. Now rebranded as BlueRock.
Float — cashflow forecasting tool that connects to Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent. Produces rolling cashflow projections and scenario planning. Useful for businesses managing cashflow actively.
A-to-Z - if you’re using something we haven’t mentioned, get in touch. We’ll tell you quickly whether we can work with it.
Not sure which software is right for you?
The right platform depends on how your business works, how comfortable you are with software, and what you actually need from it. A brief conversation is usually enough for us to recommend the right fit.
If you’re already on something and it’s not working for you - records behind, bank feed not reconciled, VAT in a mess - we can do a systems review and either fix your existing setup or recommend a better way.
